January Update

So sorry I didn't post last week. My grandfather passed away and I went to NJ with my sister and her two kids (6 year old and 20 month old). We spent 25 hours total in the car (13 there, 12 on the way back). So, considering my grandfather liked loved to eat, we did a lot of eating while in NJ. Grandpa believed in dessert first. One of his many famous lines after praying was, "And all God' people said...Let's eat!" he was a great man and will be missed. You can read the obituary here, if you'd like (there is a correction, there are 18 great-grandchildren with one on the way).

Needless to say, my time in NJ I did not adhere to any diet, I mean bagels with butter (loaded), hard rolls with butter (again loaded), all-the-way sauce (it's kind of like a chili sauce, not sure how this recipe is, but you can get a better idea of what it is here), pizza (cut the right way - pie slices all the time, not just special request), cake for my birthday, butter cookies, and more. Unfortunately, we did not get any taylor ham while there. Sorry if I'm tempting you with all my food talk, but grandpa would be proud of the spread we enjoyed to celebrate his life and the legacy he has left. Someday we will see him again.

This past week I had to get back into routine, but I did lose the weight gained on the NJ trip...so that's something. Working towards counting calories again. I keep saying it, but I really do need to get the motivation to start exercising. It's been really hard. Hopefully I can turn that around soon...even if it is just on the weekends, at least it would be something.

My One Word

Don't know if you have ever heard of it (www.myoneword.org), but the idea is to come up with one word and to change to become more like that one word. I'm not explaining it well. Instead of coming up with 1, 2, or 5 resolutions, come up with one word to change towards. I'm going to try and come up with my one word.

step 1: DETERMINE THE KIND OF PERSON YOU WANT TO BECOME
What about the condition of your heart? What about the person that God Himself has created you to be?
Well, I do want to read the Bible more, pray more and live more like Jesus would if he were here.

step 2: IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THAT PERSON
Is that person gentle? Is that person generous? What are the qualities of the person you want to become?
Yes and yes. Loving, putting others needs before their own, kind, generous, humble, not angry,

step 3: SIMPLY PICK A WORD
Well, I don't have a word yet, but while writing this post I came up with a verse and instead of just reading that verse on Bible Gateway, I read it in context, then i decided to see the whole chapter. Philippians 4 is a great chapter and it really is what I would like to do this year. So, I'm going to memorize this chapter of the Bible...maybe a word will come to me eventually.

I'm tired of driving alone in my car and getting mad because of some other driver. I choose the way I react to it. I want to choose something different than anger and yelling, I want to be able to let it go. So, Philippians 4 is my chapter for this year. I'm going to memorize the whole thing before the end of the year. Check it, there's some great stuff in that chapter!

New year, new you?!

Everybody's making resolutions now. I honestly haven't made my resolutions for the year, yet. This devotion offers some encouragement for anyone setting goals. Remember it's the little things that count.

Enjoy!

When the End Goal Seems too Hard

Lysa TerKeurst
“…make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control;
and to self-control, perseverance…”
– 2 Peter 1:5a-6a (NIV)
No matter what your struggle has been, victory is possible today. However, most of us don’t think that’s true. The problem is we tend to measure long term success while downplaying the absolute victory found in small successes.

Yesterday a friend of mine called to say she’d read my blog and, as a result, she walked away from indulging in a bag of M&Ms. That’s a victorious small success. Now, I can’t say that her scale will stand up and clap and reward her with much lower numbers today. But, if she builds upon this small success — choice by choice, day by day — she will see positive changes.

As the New Year approaches, many of us make some kind of healthy eating commitment. But even if that’s not your resolution, this principle applies to other struggles as well.

If I choose not to snap at my child and instead respond with tenderness, that’s a victorious small success.

If I choose to pause before responding to the rude sales clerk, thus giving her a smile instead of perpetuating her smirk, that’s a victorious small success.

If I choose to give my husband the benefit of the doubt rather than jumping to the conclusion he meant to hurt my feelings, that’s a victorious small success.

I like the way our key verse puts it.  In 2 Peter 1:5-6, we are reminded to “add” some things to our faith. Two of those additions are self-control and perseverance. For me, I have to decide to practice the self-control and perseverance that is mine since God’s Spirit lives in me.

Think of it like a muscle. We have muscles as a part of our body. But we must add activity to those muscles to make them effective and strong. Our muscles will work for us if we exercise them. Self-control and perseverance will work for us as we practice these over and over. Start with the small victories and bigger victories will come.

Sometimes victory seems so far away because we measure it by the end goal. And end goals can seem overwhelmingly huge, daunting, and just plain hard to reach. Instead, if we start measuring our victories by the smaller choices we make each day, victory won’t seem so impossible.

Big things are built one brick at a time.
Victories are achieved one choice at a time.
A life well lived is chosen one day at a time.
Dear Lord, I know that with You, victory is indeed possible. Day by day and choice by choice. Help me to believe this truth today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Application Steps:
Sometimes victory seems so far away because we measure it by the seemingly overwhelmingly end goal. If we start measuring our victories by the smaller choices we make each day, victory won’t seem so impossible. Think of a struggle you are dealing with and daily record your moment-by-moment small successes. Pray over them, be thankful for each one. Watch them build one choice at a time. Remember, we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us!

Reflections:
A life well lived is chosen one day at a time. What does this statement mean to you? Do you find it encouraging? Or discouraging? Why?
Have you found that you tend to miss the victories found in small daily successes?

Power Verses:
2 Corinthians 4:16, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (NIV)
Psalm 73:26, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (NIV)
Romans 8:37, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (NIV)

Weightloss Progress Week 4

Sorry I didn't post last week. I gained weight, but I kind of expected that with the holidays and all the cookies I made, etc., etc. I was not tracking calories and I should have been. I did make some healthier cookies, so that's at least a step in the right direction - isn't it? :)

I'm back on track with counting calories. I'm avoiding drinking my calories as much as possible (with the cold weather, I just can't give up hot chocolate). I have not exercised at all. I do need to get back on track with that.

Over the weekend we picked up a new EA Active for the PS3. It uses a HR Monitor and an arm and leg band along with a dongle to monitor your movement...probably more effective than the Wiimote and Nunchuck (cause all you really have to do is sit down and make the movements it wants you to with the controllers - not that I've done that - at least not an entire workout :D). Once I check it out, I'll let you know how it works and if I like it. I did really enjoy EA Active and More Workouts, so I don't see why I wouldn't like this. I just don't understand the resistance band they include with it. I know they have to make a "one size fits all," but it has ZERO resistance...even if you pull it to the tightest you can go. I use my own resistance band, so it's not really an issue for me.
